Canon Iteration Explanation: Reno wasn’t very long in the three prior worlds, but it was still enough to leave some drastic marks on him. In Wulgrimm, Reno found himself conscripted as an expendable body for an invading empire with a ruthless leader. A blood summoning ritual tore him from there to Irkalla for much the same purpose. In these worlds, he became familiar with the concept of “mana” generated by intimacy; however, from his experiences in war conducted over such mana, Reno came to expect that it was primarily hoarded by the power-hungry through dubious and often violent means. Despite a much kinder world in Noctium, Reno is still a little touchy and suspicious of those who would want to become close to him, and he may lash out if startled.

More than anxious, though, Reno is ~~surprised~~ thankful to even be alive. Before arriving in Noctium, he had died in Irkalla, ripped to pieces by a group of werewolves. Then, suddenly, he found himself in the Burnished Crater, just barely together, as scientists in environmental suits rushed to bring him to the planet’s mobile sky station. After undergoing decontamination and then surgery, Reno remained in the medical ward on the station for a short time while his new gem, a sapphire, enhanced his healing. This enchanted sapphire remains fused into his throat with no obvious way to remove it.

Reno isn’t exactly “used to” transforming already, but he isn’t surprised by it. The Gembonded of Noctium were all able to use various magical abilities and transform into limited beasts, all governed by their gem’s realm of power. His sapphire allowed Reno to heal others, raised his sensitivity to others’ emotions, and gave him water and ice magic (including a resistance to cold and the ability to breathe underwater). It’s still weird, but he can’t deny it’s convenient. He was initially embarrassed and annoyed that he didn’t get a gem that was “flashier,” but he’s growing to appreciate what he can do.

Role Qualities/Attributes: Iridescent scales surround the gem on his throat now and may also appear on the backs of his calves. However, Reno’s slyness and association as a company “dog” may just as likely lead to more canine attributes at times, including a fox tail and/or ears, when he gets excited.
Role Reasoning: Reno has defined a lot of who he is by his being a Turk – practically already a “familiar” for the Shinra Corporation. Even after Meteor, after the practical dissolution of Shinra, he chose to stay by Rufus’ side. What initially started as simply “a job” and “following orders” evolved into loyalty – not even necessarily to an idea, but to a man. But Reno still struggles with authority, as well as when and which orders to follow. He can jump to conclusions and strike first, apologize later (if at all). He has the potential to be an invaluable support and confidante but he’s been a bit too busy being a “consummate professional.” In Folkmore, Reno can explore who he is as a person without orders getting in the way, and maybe practice making some friends without concentrating on what they can do for him.

What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them? Within canon, Reno’s most traumatic experience would probably be the combination of two traumatic experiences, one right after another: witnessing what he’d believed to be the assassination of Veld/Verdot, and then seeing the majority of his peers caught in an explosion fighting Zirconiade. It was only later that he discovered that Veld’s death was faked and that his comrades were still alive. Tseng needed Reno’s reaction to be real to sell the scenario, otherwise all of their lives would have been forfeit. While he understands the necessity of the lie, he still has deep anxiety over the very real possibility of sudden loss and betrayal. That farce was also designed as proof that the remaining Turks – Tseng, Rude, and Reno – would remain “loyal” to the company and would follow orders, even to kill one another. It marked the end of being able to make more flexible decisions and to refuse orders, when Reno had been able to do so before (refusing to participate in kidnapping Nibelheim survivors to become Hojo’s test subjects) – at least, under the rule of President Shinra, Sr., and Heidegger.

What is a headcanon (or two) you feel strongly about and that you prefer playing your character with? How is this supported in canon and why do you think it benefits the character's story? I headcanon that Reno doesn’t have family, or doesn’t know them. Perhaps he lost his parents young. He clearly values family and he’s stated that if he found out he had a long-lost sibling like Rufus, he would want to meet them. His enthusiasm for getting to know Evan and putting Evan and Rufus in a room together for a family reunion strongly suggests that Reno not only romanticizes family, but wishes that he had one. If asked, he’d say the Turks are his family, especially his partner. I don’t think he would easily admit that he envies Rufus in this way, and because of the danger of his work, he’s probably resigned himself to the belief that having a family wouldn’t actually be good for him. Watching how the Shinra family fell apart and what happened to Lazard, Rufus, and Evan is pretty much all the evidence he needs that family ties are easy targets and prime collateral damage. But Reno still can’t hide the way he feels when he sees other people with their families. He gets too excited for them.

What is your character's safespace? When do they feel the most settled and comfortable? When do they feel confident and relaxed? Reno’s safespace isn’t a place, but a person. He feels safest and most comfortable when he’s with his partner, Rude. In the Remake version of the fight on the Plate, a look of abject despair takes over Reno’s whole expression when he believes Rude could have been killed in the helicopter wreck; a split second later, he looks like he’s lost all boundaries and is willing to actually take his mission to handle AVALANCHE personally for the first time. Discovering Rude is alive lightens his demeanor markedly. Rude is his best friend, and Reno will do just about anything – including spying on his partner – to make sure that Rude is okay. As long as the two of them are together, Reno seems fairly readily adaptable to new and uncomfortable situations, such as starting from scratch without the security of the company or sharing the burden of remorse.

What famous folklore, legend, or myth would you associate your character with? Are they literally inspired by Snow White? Do they have similar struggles or energy as Red Riding Hood? I can see Reno being similar to a puca – largely mischievous without necessarily being malicious. Of course the puca has the capacity to be wicked and bring misfortune, but they also were known to bring help and protection to others. Most of the time, though, the puca would lure an ignorant person for a ride upon its back, then go tearing through the moors to give them a good scare for fun. It always brought them back. Even when following the most distasteful orders, Reno maintains that it’s not personal and he holds no ill will against his targets. Likewise, despite all the harm he and the Turks did do, they put their skills to better use during and after Meteor – evacuating Midgar, helping to build Edge, and guarding and distributing the very limited and precious medicine to treat the symptoms of geostigma, making sure those who needed it actually received it rather than hoarders who would inflate its price. Reno has the full potential to be both a harbinger of misfortune or a benevolent and protective spirit. And, like the puca, he is mostly a whirlwind of energy that can only be reigned in by a clever wit and sharp spurs.

What is a time where your character failed drastically at something and how did it impact them, what did they do about it? Reno would consider dropping the Plate one of the biggest, if not the biggest, failure of himself as a person. It’s not an order he agreed with or wanted to follow, but it was given almost immediately after the Turks had just barely escaped being sentenced to death for treason. So Reno didn’t have much wiggle room not to obey. Other Turks had ordered firebombs of smaller towns to cover up evidence in the past, but never “at home” affecting Midgar, and never Reno (before this point). Another fan has made the case, after examining the animated scenes after the duel with Cloud, that Reno’s eyes look wet and tearful in the light. I’ll leave it up to interpretation, but his eyes do look red in comparison to Cloud’s and he would certainly be frustrated that an already taxing mission was made even more difficult by having to fight for something he didn’t even believe in. As far as coping, complaining and drinking were the first canon attempts. By the time of Advent Children, Reno has made it to the Acceptance stage and is debating how he could atone for his behavior rather than try to ignore the problem, but he’s not sure how to start. So as for what he’ll do about it now – he’s still figuring that out.

His next most impactful failure would be his and the Turks’ inability to find and protect Zack Fair after discovering their friend was the “escaped sample” from Nibelheim. What makes it extra frustrating is that Cissnei and Tseng were aware of Zack’s movements in the beginning. However, when the Turks’ priority changed from capturing Zack to extracting Zack, the SOLDIER had slipped through their fingers and they were unable to prevent his death.

AU clarification: [AU from Enervation & Blood Tithe] Reno is not unfamiliar with the concept of “mana” generated by intimacy. It’s almost a lovely thought. Unfortunately, from his experiences in Wulgrimm and later Irkalla, he’s come to expect that it’s primarily hoarded by the power-hungry through dubious and often violent means. For that reason, he’s a little touchy and a little suspicious (okay, maybe more than a little) of those around him. Discovering friendly faces and the new “rules” of this place will be a relief -- and considerably motivating to get very very close.

Reno will arrive after having died. Terribly. After being torn apart by werewolves. It may take some serious convincing to keep him from trying to kill the next werewolf he sees by pure fight or flight anxiety.

Features: As a result of the grievous wounds related to his death, Reno will have noticeable scars across his body as evidence of being physically mauled and torn open. Thanks to Noctium's doctors, scientists, and the power of the gems, he is alive and healed but the scars remain.

Record

Disposition: Reno is chatty, confident, and bluntly speaks his mind. He has a playful and often sarcastic nature, and he isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty -- to a degree. Reno isn’t the type to let many others get close. That said, he is fiercely loyal to those he respects. The Turks have become like family to him, especially his partner Rude. Reno lets his guard down around the taciturn man, gossiping and teasing him about girls. But if there were any perceived threat to his partner, Reno goes on the hunt. He isn’t above following and spying on people (hell, if it’s important, it’s easy to justify) and his gut is usually right. He at least had enough class not to say “I told you so” when he discovered the last girl Rude had eyes for was an AVALANCHE spy… and he was intuitive enough to let it go when he found out that Rude already knew. While he might occasionally question his partner’s taste in crushes (and pigeons? really?) he trusts Rude implicitly. When he thought there was a chance Rude had been killed above the Plate to Sector 7, Reno just about lost his mind.

Reno will often be irreverent (directly or indirectly) to those he considers incompetent -- which, outside of the Turks, includes most of Shinra leadership. He holds a grudge against Heidegger for putting his team in danger without adequate intel or guidance and his body language makes it clear that the only reason he still takes orders from the man is for a paycheck. After the events of Before Crisis, however, Reno owes Rufus Shinra his life and he’s never forgotten it. Reno is genuinely loyal to the young executive, following Rufus’ lead from penthouse to halfway house because he believes in the other man’s mind.

Reno faces the world with a smirk and a hefty load of sass, but he’s a “consummate professional” when it comes to getting his missions accomplished. That said, he knows when to “turn it off” rather than getting burned out. Reno knows to keep his professional and private lives separate (usually), taking time off very seriously. He’s a creative thinker, knowing that the best way is not always the most direct way, and being willing to bend the mission parameters in the interest of the best ultimate result. Reno puts on a mask of being heartless and Machiavellian, but he’s taken some pretty big emotional shortcuts. In capturing a specimen for Hojo, he chooses to take Nanaki (Red XIII) instead of his mate, Deneh, and allows Nanaki to complete their ritual in Cosmo Canyon before transporting him to Midgar. He’s refused to take part in gathering Nibelheim survivors for Hojo’s experiments, used subterfuge to lure out enemies rather than risk endangering innocent bystanders, and went to search for Zack before the Shinra military could find him (and regrets that he failed). As much as Reno would like to project that he doesn’t have a heart, he wears it on his sleeve when it’s broken, screaming with grief when he genuinely believes Tseng killed Veld.

Under pressure: When the chips are down and the stakes are high, that’s when Reno becomes singularly focused. The one-liners and quips stop as all of his energy goes into achieving his goal with heightened reaction time and vicious efficiency. A “Shinra dog” indeed, Reno can be like a pit bull -- he won’t let go. The trade-off is that he becomes more emotionally driven, and he doesn’t “let go” of what he values at the time. That could be the mission, in the case of releasing the Sector 7 Plate. But it could just as easily be disobeying orders to cut a mission short in the interest of saving his team. It could be completely abandoning a mission that he deems worthless, like continuing to hunt Cloud when the rest of Midgar needs to be evacuated because there’s a meteor coming. He might not do what people want him to do, but he’ll do his damnedest to follow through on what seems to be the best course of action -- including retreating “victoriously.” After all, “a pro isn’t someone who sacrifices himself for his job; that’s just a fool.”

Condition upon arrival: Reno will arrive after having died. He’ll have long, deep, jagged claw wounds across his chest, torso, and back, and it’s clear something large mauled him. He’s thinner than usual, paler, considerably worse for wear than when he initially left Gaia. He’s lucky to be provided the life-saving medical attention by those that discover him upon arrival. Mentally, emotionally, he’s on edge. On the bright side, having literally just died, he doesn’t have the strength to fight off his saviors. But he will be suspicious and skeptical toward the natives he meets until he’s gotten to know the situation better.

Canon History: Reno’s mannerisms and speech patterns suggest a low-class upbringing, though enough time with Shinra (and especially Rufus) has taught him how to be "sophisticated" if and when he has to be. Thus, he's seen a lot more than some of the other characters might, such as poverty, drug abuse, abandonment, prostitution, etc., but his time above the plate has given a nice sheen to his charm and ability to manipulate others. Little is known about Reno's past, and that's the way he likes it. He's been with the Shinra Turks for over ten years now and it's slowly eaten away at his soul. Missions began simply enough: maintaining company secrets, eliminating leaks, and assisting SOLDIER recruitment. The demands grew as the company did, and as global tensions rose. Threats were eliminated and assets were acquired – however, some were not volunteers. Not long after Reno joined the Turks, Shelke Rui was identified as a particular asset to Shinra for her Synaptic Net Dive ability. The Turks kidnapped her from her sister’s custody in order to forcibly recruit her into the SOLDIER. Unbeknownst to them, President Shinra, Sr. decided she would be best used for Deepground, and “Lost Unit” Deepground SOLDIERS ambushed the Turks over the girl. The Turks were injured, their SOLDIER convoy killed. As far as Reno knew, until the reveal of Deepground (Dirge of Cerberus), Shelke Rui was dead. For the next ten years, Shelke would be held by Deepground and the Restrictors, and her sister Shalua would search for more kidnapped SOLDIER candidates.

In the meantime, Reno and the Turks continued their work during the war with Wutai, while the Lost Unit continued to take the injured from the battlefield – to be revived, or recruited into Deepground experiments. Normal SOLDIER candidates were recruited or pressed into service as needed, for the greater good of expansion and the war effort. Turks utilized their skills for espionage as well, and on several occasions assisted Zack with ferreting out Wutaiian spies and insurgents in Midgar.

Of course, anti-Shinra forces were always at work, if not one group then another. After Wutai officially surrendered after the capture of Fort Tamblin, the original AVALANCHE Insurgence was founded. For the next five years, Reno would be involved in attempts to deal with the Wutaiian-based group as well as clean up after Genesis’ desertion. Forced SOLDIER “recruitment” was ramped up intensely, often led by Reno and Rude, after SOLDIER nearly collapsed with the mass exodus following Genesis. Turks were also tasked with corralling others involved in the threat brought by Genesis and his clones, investigating a theft of classified Shinra documents, while still maintaining a guard of the President. Again, Reno led several of these missions, reflecting his rank below Veld and Tseng. Reno is likewise responsible for acquiring Red XIII (Nanaki) for Shinra research as part of an endangered species. However, at this point Reno still has enough heart to wait for Nanaki to finish a traditional ritual with his mate before the Turks bring him back to Shinra.

As the Turks learned more of the inner workings of Shinra, they grew more disillusioned and agreed to side with their leader, Veld, to save his daughter – knowing it meant committing treason. Unable to control them, President Shinra, Sr. eliminated their order and put a bounty on the remaining Turks. Without revealing spoilers, this resulted in a stand-off between the President holding their lives and Veld, and Tseng, Reno, and Rude holding Rufus for exchange. The Turks are spared only by Rufus’ doing, but in exchange for their lives and their positions, Shinra, Sr. orders the immediate death of Veld. Reno begins to protest, but Tseng interrupts him by shooting Veld, essentially saving his subordinate. The first and last time anyone sees Reno scream and cry is after Tseng’s “assassination” of Veld (Before Crisis). This is the moment where the emotionally-compromised Reno that would later massacre Sector 7 is born, suppressing all of those feelings in order to carry on. It takes such a disaster as Sector 7, and facing the end of the world, for Reno to really take another look at himself again and try to change.

The Turks were also involved in the cover-up of the Nibelheim incident, rebuilding the city and maintaining a lie. Most of the work was left to Veld when Reno and the others voiced their discomfort over the idea. When Zack and Cloud escaped from Shinra Mansion, the Turks organized a recovery mission in an effort to provide amnesty to the former SOLDIER and infantryman after discovering the truth of their captivity. Unfortunately, the Turks were unable to locate the two before Shinra infantry did, firing upon them and leaving Zack and Cloud for dead.

Melodies of Life history:
Reno initially struggled to adapt to life on Crystallis. He had gone from being a Turk seeking redemption to being driven by the next sexual coupling for survival, and then when he had finally managed to handle that -- he was expected to be some kind of Hero. A Hero who was alone, separated from the deep bonds he had finally made on another world, who didn’t know what to do. So he went back to his old ways. He made shallow relationships, he was self-serving, he was underhanded to get results. He played at “hero” without much commitment. It didn’t make him feel any better. But he started to notice the others who were really trying -- people like Cloud, Yuna, Vincent. Even Sephiroth.

If Sephiroth could be a real hero…

So Reno tried to change -- again. And he noticed the people who stayed by him to support him doing it. People from home and from other worlds alike stood by him, and he stood by them. He crawled through sewers and exorcised ghosts, not because he gained anything but because it was the right thing to do. He killed monsters instead of people -- not even Palitutu, even if he believed she deserved it. It wasn’t always perfect; once trapped in a time loop, he’d stabbed a civilian out of a final frustration for having to talk to them so many times. He was apprehended by the police and fell to his death after being shot with a Sleep dart on a rooftop. (The time loop problem was a bit more appreciated after coming back from all that.) He succumbed to mind control and murdered Malik, robbing the Assassins of a valuable resource. He himself was murdered soon after, but thankfully awoke crystal stasis. And when he confessed what he had done with genuine remorse, he had still been forgiven and accepted by the Brotherhood.

He fell in love -- again -- against all odds. Seeing the Sage’s last vision of the future and his role in it only cemented his decision. Reno wasn’t about to lose someone else who had become important to him, not by the enemy and certainly not by his own inaction. He hadn’t exactly counted on a five year crystal stasis to bring that future to him, but once reunited with the other Heroes he met the struggle head-on. Invested in his future on Crystallis, he threw himself fully into saving that world -- and as reckless as he was to put others’ lives before his own, he survived to see the Heroes’ success. For the last man in the world he expected to honor, respect, and grieve, he was sad to see Sephiroth go, but Reno would never forget his sacrifice for the birth of a new world.

Reno returned to Aqures Ixen with Johnny, choosing to stay there rather than return to Gaia. It wasn’t an easy choice, but he felt it was the right one. The moogles of the Brotherhood had kept the Assassins’ secrets safe and Reno was chosen to lead the branch there when Mary Read left Crystallis. With one Job left, his own designed “Turk,” Reno worked to combine his skills from home with those learned as an Assassin to further this new Brotherhood.

Personality:
Reno’s appearance really represents his personality well; disheveled, yet in uniform, he is a clusterfuck of contradictions. Normally he has a very laid-back attitude, highly maintained by arrogance, so when he is sufficiently challenged he loses his temper. His cold, cruel exterior in the presence of enemies or carrying out orders (or, similarly, his cocky, lackadaisical attitude on the job) was likely developed as a self-protecting mechanism to simply "get through.” If he pretended it didn't matter, he wouldn't have to face what he'd done, or what he'd allowed others to do to him. He drinks himself to oblivion when it gets to be too much. He can be extremely loyal, but to a degree of self-imposed boundaries: when he is on, he is 100% on; when he is off, he is 100% off. He allows Cloud and the other “terrorists” to go about their business, despite complaints from Elena, because he is on vacation. And when he coldly drops Don Corneo off the highest mountain in the area, the only reason behind it is, “Because it’s our job.” He has spent enough time in Shinra doing dirty work that little by little he has adapted to be able to heartlessly commit atrocities (such as the destruction of Sector 7). When once he would've had moral qualms about his orders and would even consider rebelling, the gradual exposure to more and more questionable missions has worn him down to the point where massacring hundreds of innocent civilians is simply another job. It's the small, petty evils that have led him so far astray and it's not until the entire planet is almost destroyed that his eyes are opened to the full nature of the atrocities that Shinra has committed. Now shameful of his sins and tired of fighting his old "enemies," he and his comrades seek to atone for what they've done - though Reno questions if he'll ever be able to fully atone for such evils.

After what he has been ordered to do, Reno has been emotionally affected. He breaks down and cries when he believes Veld has been shot, he is frequently drinking, and his behavior can sometimes be excessively violent to the situation (dropping Don Corneo off a cliff versus apprehending him in any other way). It is likely that no one in Shinra administration really cared – Shinra, Sr. was more concerned with money and how he could use his people as tools, and by the time Rufus ascends there is simply no time for a psych evaluation, whether Rufus wanted to or not. On the other hand, after his experience with Drs. Hojo and Hollander (among others), Reno isn’t a fan of medical professionals and probably wouldn’t have gone on his own accord anyway. Instead, Reno has a tendency to drink away his troubles as his go-to solution, and whenever he is off duty he's usually at a bar (as can be seen in Wutai at Turtle’s Paradise, and even during Rufus’ own Inauguration).

He often holds himself above the rules, such as (again) the uniform, immediately disobeying orders he’s just given to subordinates (“don’t step on the flowers”), or disobeying direct orders to engage Cloud because he didn’t feel like it. His confidence in his competence is not without merit, however. He is second in command after Tseng, a position that was both earned through hard work and prowess in battle, and probably the absence of the other Turks immediately prior to Final Fantasy 7. While Cloud and company defeat him several times throughout Final Fantasy VII, Reno has actually participated in, and led, quite a few successful missions during the events of Before Crisis/Crisis Core. Even though he had to leave Tseng and Elena behind, the mission to recover Jenova’s Head in Advent Children can be considered a success. Lastly, while his professional limits tend to lean toward the selfish, he does have some sensible motivations and his pride does not keep him from retreating when necessary. In his words, “A pro isn’t someone who sacrifices himself for his job. That’s just a fool.” He would do anything for Shinra, but he wouldn’t do that. So when he runs into Cloud and Gang again in the tunnels during the Meteor evacuation, he decides he’d rather disobey orders than get his ass handed to him again when there were more important issues to deal with, such as getting more people out of the city.

Reno is not completely heartless, though, as he does risk his life to go back and save a few brainwashed orphans from Bahamut-SIN in Advent Children (even though most of them are, in fact, orphaned because of him). He and Rude also save Tifa after her defeat by Loz (although, admittedly, they had an investment in Cloud & Tifa’s survival). As for saving the children, without anything in it for him, a few conjectures can be made. It could be part of his attempts for “redemption,” although it happens as almost an afterthought more than a conscious decision. It is entirely possible that Reno will only attack “adults” (with wiggle room for Yuffie), and company-identified “enemies,” (when he’s not on vacation) leaving unarmed children as non-targets. Dropping the Plate over Sector 7 is easily overlooked/justified as a faceless, nameless massacre where Reno did not have to see any person in particular to be faced with concrete effects. However, Advent Children and the Sector 7 massacre are the only instances where children are ever involved, directly or indirectly, so there is no canon evidence as to his change of heart.

Overall, though, Reno would be an interesting drinking buddy, a fun gossip-monger, a good (if not difficult) friend, and probably a good lay. Even if some of those qualities could be from poor coping mechanisms for continued exposure to cognitive dissonance and trauma.

After working with them for so long, the Turks have become more of a family to Reno than simply an extension of Shinra. Tseng and Reno are polar opposites when it comes to personality and decorum, but Reno respects the other man, especially for making some of the harder decisions that Reno couldn’t (or wouldn’t), such as earning their way back into Shinra (Before Crisis) with the order to assassinate the previous “treasonous” leader of the Turks. Elena may always be treated like a “rookie,” but she’s still earned her way into the organization through hard work and dedication, so she also has some respect – at least more than the average person. Somewhat like a little sister to Reno (since he worked with her older sister before), there exists that attitude of “nobody can treat her like crap except me.” Rude, of course, is Reno’s best friend and working partner. The redhead is actually pretty protective of the larger man, even though he can get pretty careless when it comes to respecting personal property (ex: sunglasses in AC). When Rude starts acting a little different, Reno is the first to order a tail on him, then follow him and discover a secret relationship with a woman who turns out to be a spy and confronts her. It can be assumed that when Rude confessed he was also attracted to Tifa that alarm bells went off in Reno’s head for the same protective streak. However, it is also reasonable that Reno is somewhat jealous of his partner’s attention and perhaps has a personal interest (since Reno’s sexuality is not explicitly explained in canon) in asking the other man “who do you like?” In either scenario, Reno is loyal and dedicated to those he considers friends.

Rufus is a bit of a special case. Things did not start out well with him, to avoid spoilers, and eventually ended up in a physical altercation where Reno, Rude, and Tseng captured the younger Shinra and used him as leverage. Rufus earns Reno’s respect by staying his father’s order to have the three Turks executed, as well as just plain being a more effective president later on.

What it really comes down to is a strong set of relationships built upon the professional obligation to live or die with these people. After a while, the obligation turns into a genuine connection and willingness to die for any of them. Technically, when Shinra still existed, Turks were not able to freely leave the company because of their level of security clearance and information. Reno stayed because he had an idea of what he was getting into when he joined, and he would be killed if he defected (canon proven, “the only way you leave the Turks is in a body bag,” the assassination order for Veld). Now, though, it’s become more of an emotional bond than simply for his physical safety (not that that wouldn’t be threatened if he left); when the world has gone to shit, and these are the people that were once your entire life, you stay with them for stability. Shinra is what Reno knows. He also feels obligated to actively work to set things right and atone for what the Shinra Corporation had done in the past, as do Rufus and the other Turks (at least so they say). Atoning for past sins under familiar leadership with an elite “family” of coworkers is stable and safe.

As for previous members of AVALANCHE, Reno holds no malice for them. He seeks out Cloud through Tifa (with a friendly phone call, no less) when Rufus needs assistance (Advent Children) – and while he does attack Cloud, it’s more out of an obligation as bodyguard. After he’s easily defeated, he completely lets it go and is a lot friendlier. From an airsick rookie to becoming an all-around badass, Cloud would probably get super props from Reno if it didn’t mean Reno had to admit being less than the best.

Hands down, though, Reno can’t stand incompetent people – biggest example, the now-deceased Heidegger. He’ll probably follow orders from them because he “has” to, but he will hate it and let them know. On the flip side, if you seem to have your shit together and know how to properly handle the human weapon at your disposal, he’ll behave.

Amatomnes: Finding someone who loved him, and discovering he himself was capable of really loving another person, has had a profound impact on Reno. He’s started smoking and drinking less, his temper isn’t on such a short fuse, he’s more serious and introspective. He’s started (trying) to actually cook real food. It’s made him more generous and more likely to believe in love for others rather than dismissing it outright as ludicrous. He’s still more emotionally driven than by slow logic, and that can sometimes lead to the old habitual leaps of assumptions and reckless behavior. But he does have a longer fuse in general and he tries to be more thoughtful of others before jumping into things. “What would Kyo do?” isn’t the most compelling thing to get him to be mindful, though, as Kyo had his own short temper. Overall, he is a lot less angry and impulsive (or will be again, once the initial shock of finding a Kyo in crystal stasis and his necklace missing has passed.)

Not all of his sexual experiences on the island were pleasant ones. If the wrong person touches him the wrong way on a bad day, he might react in a way that would seem inappropriately dramatic to the offense. He’ll probably apologize later for overreacting and be embarrassed. He can’t help but be a little sensitive. Marlboros are a given to make him squeamish.
Since this isn’t his first “new world,” he’ll be a bit more open-minded regarding other character worlds and timelines – especially people like Sephiroth. Not that it won’t still be strange to him, but he’ll generally be a bit more forgiving in that department (which might seem strange to others).

Melodies of Life: Reno is continuing to try and make good moral decisions -- not just for himself, but for those he has grown to love. Knowing Johnny is a real half-demon and is still trying to live right has put things in perspective, as has the kindness of those from home. Hearing from people like Yuffie and Vincent that he does have a good heart is motivating him to act like it. Perhaps most powerful of all was seeing Sephiroth become the hero he always could have been on Midgar. Some old habits die hard, and Reno is still drawn to the shadowy side of things as an Assassin and a Turk used to playing by his own rules, but he tries to consider honor and the lesser evils. More than anything, he’s trying to be a leader that Mary would be proud of and Malik would respect. Malik’s death and losing Kyo to the void are his greatest regrets. Reno doesn’t want anyone else to be hurt by his shortcomings.

In the end, he’s become more friendly -- toward strangers as well as his friends. He’s trying to be more optimistic, as much as certain insecurities still very much exist, but it still takes some effort for him not to lean toward assuming the worst with any bad signs. He doesn’t regret leaving Rufus and Shinra behind, exactly, but he’s trying to live each day to remind himself that he made a good choice.
